Machame Route

Kilimanjaro Climbing – Machame Route 7 Days

The 7-Day Machame Route is a scenic Mount Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary designed to give trekkers more time to ascend and acclimatize before the summit attempt.

Known as the “Whiskey Route,” Machame approaches Kilimanjaro from the southern side and passes through several distinct ecological zones, from rainforest to alpine desert and finally the summit glaciers and volcanic landscape.

The seven-day schedule provides additional time compared with shorter Machame itineraries. The route includes the important Shira Plateau, Barranco Wall, Karanga Valley and Barafu Camp sections before the final summit attempt at Uhuru Peak.

This itinerary is suitable for travelers who want a structured Kilimanjaro camping experience with a longer schedule for altitude adaptation.

THE ROUTE

About the Machame Route

The Machame Route begins at Machame Gate, where the trek enters the lush rainforest on the southern slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro.

As the elevation increases, the landscape changes dramatically. The forest gives way to moorland and the open Shira Plateau before the route continues through the high mountain environment toward Lava Tower and Barranco.

One of the memorable sections is the Barranco Wall, followed by the descent into Karanga Valley and the final approach to Barafu Camp.

From Barafu, climbers begin the summit attempt during the night, ascending toward Stella Point before continuing along the crater rim to Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

After reaching the summit, the descent continues toward lower camps before returning to Machame Gate.

DAY BY DAY

7-Day Kilimanjaro Itinerary

1

Machame Gate to Machame Camp

Route: Route / Camp: Machame Gate → Machame CampElevation: 1,800 m → 2,835 mDistance: 11 kmHiking time: 5–7 hoursStay: Machame CampMeals: Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, drive to Machame Gate where the registration and park-entry procedures are completed. The trek begins through the lush rainforest on the lower slopes of Mount Kilimanjaro. The trail can be shaded and humid, with dense vegetation surrounding the route. As you continue climbing, the forest gradually becomes less dense before reaching Machame Camp. Dinner is served at camp followed by an overnight stay.

2

Machame Camp to Shira Camp

Route: Camp: Machame Camp → Shira CampElevation: 2,835 m → 3,840 mDistance: 5 kmHiking time: 4–6 hoursStay: Shira CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, leave Machame Camp and continue climbing through the moorland zone. The trail becomes steeper as you move away from the rainforest. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse, opening views toward the surrounding mountain landscape. The trek eventually reaches the Shira Plateau, one of the distinctive features of the Machame Route. On a clear day, you may have views toward Kibo and the surrounding volcanic landscape. Overnight at Shira Camp.

3

Shira Camp to Lava Tower and Barranco Camp

Route: Camp: Shira Camp → Lava Tower → Barranco CampElevation: 3,840 m → 4,630 m → 3,960 mDistance: 10 kmHiking time: 6–8 hoursStay: Barranco CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today is an important acclimatization day. The route gradually climbs from the Shira Plateau toward Lava Tower, reaching approximately 4,630 metres. After spending time at the higher elevation, the trail descends toward Barranco Camp. This follows the principle of gaining elevation during the day while sleeping at a lower altitude. The landscape changes into a dramatic alpine environment with the imposing Barranco Wall visible ahead. Overnight at Barranco Camp.

4

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Route: Camp: Barranco Camp → Barranco Wall → Karanga CampElevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 mDistance: 5 kmHiking time: 4–6 hoursStay: Karanga CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

The day begins with one of the most recognizable sections of the Machame Route: the Barranco Wall. The trail climbs gradually across the wall using a combination of natural steps and rocky sections. Although the wall looks imposing from camp, the route is a trekking ascent rather than technical rock climbing. After reaching the upper section, continue through the high-altitude landscape toward Karanga Valley. The shorter hiking day allows time to rest and prepare for the next stage. Overnight at Karanga Camp.

5

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Route: Camp: Karanga Camp → Barafu CampElevation: 4,035 m → 4,673 mDistance: 4 kmHiking time: 4–5 hoursStay: Barafu CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, begin the climb toward Barafu Camp, the final major camp before the summit attempt. The landscape becomes increasingly rocky and exposed as you approach the southern slopes of Kibo. Barafu means “ice” in Swahili, reflecting the cold and exposed character of this high-altitude camp. After arriving at camp, the mountain team prepares you for summit night. You will have an early dinner and rest before beginning the summit attempt during the night.

6

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

Route: Barafu Camp → Stella Point → Uhuru Peak → Mweka CampElevation: 4,673 m → 5,739 m → 5,895 m → 3,100 mDistance: 17 kmHiking time: 12–15 hoursStay: Mweka CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Summit day begins in the early hours of the morning. The climb follows the steep trail toward Stella Point on the crater rim. The pace is deliberately slow because of the high altitude and cold conditions. After reaching Stella Point, continue around the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point in Africa. At approximately 5,895 metres, you will have time to celebrate the summit and take photographs, weather permitting. After the summit, begin the long descent toward Barafu and continue to Mweka Camp for the night. This is normally the longest and most demanding day of the trek.

7

weka Camp to Mweka Gate

Route: Camp: Mweka Camp → Mweka GateElevation: 3,100 m → 1,640 mDistance: 10 kmHiking time: 3–5 hoursStay: No mountain accommodationMeals: Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the rainforest toward Mweka Gate. The lower altitude and forest environment provide a major change from the summit environment experienced the previous day. At Mweka Gate, complete the park registration procedures and receive your summit recognition documentation where applicable. Your driver will meet you and transfer you back to your hotel in Moshi or to your next destination. For travelers continuing their Tanzania adventure, this is an ideal point to begin a Northern Tanzania safari.
