Umbwe Route

Kilimanjaro Climbing – Umbwe Route 7 Days

The 7-Day Umbwe Route is one of the more direct approaches to Mount Kilimanjaro, beginning from the southern side of the mountain before connecting with the higher western and southern sections of the Kilimanjaro climbing network.
Umbwe is known for its steep and direct initial ascent. The route moves quickly from the lower forest into higher mountain terrain, making it a demanding option for experienced trekkers who are comfortable with steep hiking.
The seven-day itinerary provides additional time compared with shorter Umbwe itineraries and allows the climb to progress through the mountain zones before the summit attempt.
The route eventually connects with the Southern Circuit before continuing toward Barafu and the summit of Uhuru Peak.

THE ROUTE

About the Umbwe Route

The Umbwe Route begins through dense montane forest before following a narrow and relatively steep trail toward higher elevations.

As the forest gradually opens, the terrain becomes more exposed and the mountain landscape changes from forest to moorland and high alpine terrain.

One of the distinctive characteristics of Umbwe is its directness. The early stages gain elevation relatively quickly, so pacing and acclimatization are particularly important.

After reaching the higher mountain areas, the route joins the Southern Circuit and continues toward the summit approach.

Following the summit, the descent normally follows the Mweka side of the mountain, giving climbers a different landscape on the way down.

1

Umbwe Gate to Umbwe Camp

Route: Umbwe Gate → Umbwe CampElevation: 1,600 m → 2,850 mDistance: 11 kmHiking time: 5–7 hoursStay: Umbwe CampMeals: Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, transfer toward Umbwe Gate on the southern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. Complete registration and begin trekking through the lush montane forest. The trail gradually becomes steeper as it follows the Umbwe Ridge. The forest can be dense in the early stages, with the trail becoming increasingly rugged as elevation is gained. Continue to Umbwe Camp for the first overnight stay.

2

Umbwe Camp to Barranco Camp

Route: Umbwe Camp → Barranco CampElevation: 2,850 m → 3,960 mDistance: 6 kmHiking time: 4–6 hoursStay: Barranco CampMeals: Lunch & Dinner

Continue along the steep Umbwe route as the forest gives way to moorland and more exposed mountain terrain. The trail eventually reaches the higher mountain slopes before connecting with the Southern Circuit. Continue toward Barranco Camp, situated beneath the dramatic Barranco Wall. This is an important acclimatization stage because the group has gained considerable elevation since the beginning of the climb.

3

Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp

Route: Barranco Camp → Karanga CampElevation: 3,960 m → 4,035 mDistance: 5 kmHiking time: 4–5 hoursStay: Karanga CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, begin the climb toward the famous Barranco Wall. The ascent involves scrambling and careful movement over sections of rocky terrain. Mountain guides assist the group through the more technical sections. After reaching the top of the wall, continue across the undulating terrain toward Karanga Camp. The relatively short distance allows the group to continue acclimatizing before moving toward the summit zone.

4

Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

Route: Karanga Camp → Barafu CampElevation: 4,035 m → 4,640 mDistance: 4 kmHiking time: 4–5 hoursStay: Barafu CampMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Continue toward Barafu Camp through increasingly sparse high-altitude terrain. Barafu is the principal staging area for the summit attempt. After arriving at camp, the guides prepare the group for the summit day. Eat an early dinner and rest as much as possible before the nighttime ascent.

5

Barafu Camp to Uhuru Peak and Mweka Camp

The summit attempt begins during the early hours of the morning. The climb proceeds slowly across the steep volcanic slopes toward Stella Point on the crater rim. From Stella Point, continue along the crater rim toward Uhuru Peak, the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro at approximately 5,895 metres. After reaching the summit, spend a short period taking photographs and appreciating the views before beginning the descent. Descend toward Mweka Camp for the overnight stay. This is the longest and most demanding day of the climb.

6

Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

Route: Mweka Camp → Mweka GateElevation: 3,080 m → 1,640 mDistance: 10 kmHiking time: 3–5 hoursStay: HotelMeals: Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, begin the final descent through the forest. The trail gradually loses elevation as you return toward the lower slopes of Kilimanjaro. IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Before You Climb

Umbwe should not be selected simply because it has a shorter or more direct approach.

The first part of the route is steep and can be physically demanding. It is better suited to climbers who are comfortable with challenging mountain terrain and who have prepared appropriately for a high-altitude trek.

The summit day remains the most demanding part of the expedition, with a long ascent in cold and low-oxygen conditions followed by a substantial descent.
