Marangu Route

Kilimanjaro Climbing – Marangu Route 5 Days

The 5-Day Marangu Route is a classic Mount Kilimanjaro climbing itinerary that approaches the mountain from the southeastern side. Known as the “Coca-Cola Route,” Marangu is the only main Kilimanjaro route where climbers stay in mountain huts rather than camping in tents.

This itinerary takes you through Kilimanjaro's changing vegetation zones, from the cultivated foothills and rainforest to the moorland, alpine desert and high-altitude summit zone. The climb culminates with an early-morning summit attempt from Kibo Hut toward Uhuru Peak at 5,895 metres.

The 5-day schedule is a relatively compact way to climb Kilimanjaro and does not include an additional acclimatization day at Horombo. Climbers should therefore understand that the shorter schedule requires a strong level of preparation and careful attention to altitude during the ascent.

After reaching Uhuru Peak, you descend through the mountain's upper zones before continuing to Marangu Gate, where your Kilimanjaro climb comes to an end.

THE ROUTE

About the Marangu Route

The Marangu Route provides a different Kilimanjaro experience from the mountain's camping routes. Instead of sleeping in tents, climbers stay in mountain huts at the established overnight points along the route.

The journey begins at Marangu Gate and enters the lush Kilimanjaro rainforest. As the trail climbs higher, the vegetation gradually changes into heath and moorland before reaching the alpine desert around Kibo.

One of the most memorable sections is the approach to Kibo Hut, where the landscape becomes increasingly sparse and rugged. From here, the summit attempt normally begins around midnight or in the early hours of the morning.

The climb toward Gilman's Point and onward to Uhuru Peak is demanding because of the altitude, cold temperatures and steep terrain. Reaching Uhuru Peak provides the opportunity to stand at the highest point in Africa before beginning the long descent.

Because this is the 5-day version of the Marangu Route, the itinerary moves at a relatively compact pace. Climbers should maintain a slow, steady rhythm and follow the mountain crew's guidance throughout the ascent.

5-Day Kilimanjaro Itinerary

1

Marangu Gate – Mandara Hut

Route: Marangu Gate → Mandara HutElevation: 1,860 m → 2,720 mDistance: Approximately 8 kmHiking time: 4–5 hoursStay: Mandara HutMeals: Lunch & Dinner

Your Kilimanjaro adventure begins with a transfer to Marangu Gate on the southeastern side of Mount Kilimanjaro. After registration and the necessary park formalities, you begin trekking into the lush rainforest. The trail is surrounded by tall trees, vegetation and birdlife as you gradually gain elevation. Your mountain guide will set a steady pace designed to conserve energy for the higher sections of the climb. After several hours of trekking, you arrive at Mandara Hut, where you spend your first night on the mountain. Enjoy dinner and rest while preparing for the next day's ascent toward Horombo Hut.

2

Mandara Hut – Horombo Hut

Route: Mandara Hut → Horombo HutElevation: 2,720 m → 3,720 mDistance: Approximately 12 kmHiking time: 6–8 hoursStay: Horombo HutMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

After breakfast, continue your ascent from Mandara Hut toward Horombo Hut. The trail gradually leaves the rainforest and enters the heath and moorland zone. As you climb higher, the vegetation becomes more open and views of the surrounding landscape begin to expand. The route continues toward Horombo Hut, located at approximately 3,720 metres. This is an important stage of the climb because you are now entering a significantly higher altitude environment. Arrive at Horombo Hut, have dinner and rest in preparation for the next stage toward Kibo.

3

Horombo Hut – Kibo Hut

Route: Horombo Hut → Kibo HutElevation: 3,720 m → 4,703 mDistance: Approximately 10 kmHiking time: 6–8 hoursStay: Kibo HutMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Today you continue toward Kibo Hut, the final overnight stop before the summit attempt. The trail crosses the upper moorland and gradually enters the alpine desert zone. Vegetation becomes increasingly sparse as the altitude rises. The path eventually reaches the Kibo area, where you have an opportunity to rest and prepare for the summit attempt. After an early dinner, organize your summit equipment and try to get as much rest as possible before the midnight or early-morning departure toward Uhuru Peak.

4

Kibo Hut – Uhuru Peak – Horombo Hut

Route: Kibo Hut → Gilman's Point → Uhuru Peak → Kibo Hut → Horombo HutElevation: 4,703 m → 5,895 m → 3,720 mDistance: Approximately 22 kmHiking time: 12–15 hoursStay: Horombo HutMeals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Your summit attempt begins in the early hours of the morning. The climb from Kibo Hut toward Gilman's Point is one of the most demanding sections of the entire route. The combination of steep terrain, cold temperatures, darkness and high altitude requires a slow and controlled pace. After reaching Gilman's Point on the crater rim, continue around the crater toward Uhuru Peak. At approximately 5,895 metres, Uhuru Peak is the highest point on Mount Kilimanjaro and the highest point in Africa. After spending time at the summit, begin the descent back toward Kibo Hut. After a short rest, continue descending toward Horombo Hut for the night. This is a long and physically demanding day, so maintaining a steady pace and following the guide's instructions is essential.

5

Horombo Hut – Marangu Gate – Moshi

Route: Horombo Hut → Marangu Gate → MoshiElevation: 3,720 m → 1,860 mDistance: Approximately 20 kmHiking time: 5–7 hoursStay: Hotel in Moshi / departureMeals: Breakfast & Lunch

After breakfast, begin the final descent from Horombo Hut toward Marangu Gate. The trail passes back through the moorland and rainforest zones as you gradually lose altitude. Once you reach Marangu Gate, complete the park exit procedures and meet your transfer vehicle. You will then be transferred to Moshi or your onward destination. If you are continuing with a Tanzania safari, this is a convenient point to begin the next stage of your northern Tanzania adventure.

WHY THIS CLIMB

Why Choose This Kilimanjaro Tour?

The 5-Day Marangu Route is suitable for travelers who want the established Marangu experience while working with a shorter trekking schedule.

Key reasons to consider this itinerary include:

* Mountain hut accommodation instead of camping.
* A well-established route with clearly defined trekking stages.
* A direct approach from the Marangu side of Mount Kilimanjaro.
* Five trekking days from gate to gate.
* A challenging summit attempt toward Uhuru Peak.
* A compact itinerary for travelers with limited time.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

Before You Climb

The 5-Day Marangu Route is a high-altitude mountain climb and should not be treated as an ordinary hiking trip.

Before booking, consider your physical preparation, previous trekking experience, available time and ability to cope with altitude.

The summit section is particularly demanding because it combines a long trekking day with high altitude, cold temperatures and reduced oxygen availability.

A successful Kilimanjaro climb depends on preparation, pacing, hydration, appropriate clothing and following the instructions of the mountain guides.

Weather and mountain conditions can change, and the final itinerary may be adjusted by the professional mountain team when necessary for safety.
